Bonding & Tooth Color Fillings

Bonding and Teeth FillingWith bonding,  our doctors place resin, a tooth-colored filling material, on your teeth. First we select the right color of bonding material to match your teeth, and then we roughen the surface of your teeth lightly. Next, we apply a conditioning agent to ensure that the resin bonds properly. Then we apply the bonding material and sculpt the resin into the desired shape. Depending on the material, we may harden it with a special, high-intensity light. Lastly, we smooth and polish the new restoration. Once in place, bonded restorations are very strong. Bonding can give you beautiful, natural-looking teeth that will improve your smile.

Another important factor regarding bonded restorations is that they can also help to strengthen the teeth. For example, if we placed a silver-mercury filling the susceptibility to fracture would increase by up to 75%. A bonded composite restoration could alternatively restore up to 95% of the original tooth strength.

What is bonding?

Bonding is the application of a tooth color restoration that becomes chemically and micro-mechanically bonded to the tooth. It is also known as a composite restoration, and contains no potentially harmful chemicals like the mercury found in the antiquated silver-mercury filling. Bonding can provide dramatic results in a relatively short time, usually in one appointment. With bonding, we can:
  • Close spaces between teeth
  • Lengthen small or misshapen teeth
  • Whiten stained or dark teeth
  • Protect chipped or worn teeth from damage and restore their original looks
  • Tooth color fillings
  • Replacing old silver-mercury amalgam fillings
  • We can shape and color a single tooth, or we can change your entire smile.

Restoring Your Smile With Bonding

Perhaps you played a little too hard, or maybe you fell or had some other accident. The result is a chipped tooth. Or perhaps your teeth have darkened or become discolored. Whatever the cause, your smile has changed, and you’d like to have your old smile back again. Broken or discolored teeth are unsightly and may have a negative impact on your self-esteem. But the problems don’t end there: a broken tooth may be more susceptible to fractures and decay. We can treat the teeth with crowns and veneers, but bonding may be a better answer because it conserves a maximum amount of tooth structure and protects teeth from additional wear and damage. Plus it provides great results.
